WPPS Reports Strong Results Under New
Performance System
WEST POINT, VA — West Point Public Schools (WPPS) has released its first results under Virginia’s new School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF), with all schools meeting the state’s standards for student achievement.
Under the new framework, each West Point Public Schools building earned full accreditation, reflecting strong overall performance and student growth.
West Point Middle/High School received a ‘Distinguished’ designation, the highest rating category under the new model, and it ranked among the top five schools in Region 3 for Science Mastery. West Point Elementary School was rated ‘On Track,’ indicating strong academic performance and consistent growth. The elementary school also ranked among the top five schools in Region 3 for Reading Mastery, Math Mastery, and Science Mastery.
“These first results under Virginia’s new SPSF show that our schools are ‘Pointed in the Right Direction,’” said Superintendent Larry Frazier. “We’re proud of the dedication of our teachers, staff, and students that made this possible, and we remain committed to serving as a bridge to opportunity for all students.”
The SPSF, launched this year by the Virginia Department of Education, is designed to provide clear and transparent information about school performance while ensuring schools receive appropriate support to strengthen student learning.
The framework evaluates schools using multiple measures, including Standards of Learning test results, learning growth in reading and math, indicators of readiness such as chronic absenteeism and participation in advanced coursework, and high school graduation rates. Based on performance across these areas, schools receive one of four ratings: Distinguished, On Track, Off Track, or Needs Intensive Support. State education leaders have said the framework is intended to emphasize proficiency and continuous improvement rather than labeling schools as failing.
