WPPS Observes Virginia Bullying Prevention Month
WEST POINT, VA — The West Point Public Schools is joining schools across Virginia in observing October as VSBA Bullying Prevention Month.
This initiative, organized by the Virginia School Boards Association, highlights the harmful effects of bullying and encourages collective action to create safe and supportive school environments. Research shows that when adults and children stand together against bullying, the behavior stops.
Childhood bullying remains a serious issue, contributing to increased absenteeism, mental health challenges, and poor academic performance, among other issues. Bullying takes many forms, including physical aggression, verbal harassment, social exclusion, and damage to personal items. Cyberbullying, which occurs through social media and other digital platforms, continues to be a serious concern, particularly at the middle and high school levels.
“Preventing bullying requires all of us—students, staff, parents, and community members—working together to set expectations of respect and kindness,” said WPPS Superintendent Larry Frazier. “At West Point Public Schools, we are committed to fostering a climate where every student feels safe, valued, and supported.”
The National Center for Education Statistics found in a 2024 survey that 10% of elementary schools, 15% of high schools, and 28% of middle schools reported bullying occurring at least once a week.
WPPS encourages students and families to take proactive steps to prevent and address bullying whenever it occurs. Students are urged to report incidents to a trusted adult right away, or they may use the division’s “See Something, Say Something” form. Adults and older students are encouraged to model kindness, demonstrate positive behavior, and step in when they witness bullying. In addition, families and educators should remain attentive to students’ online activity and have open conversations about the risks of cyberbullying.
