West Point Holds Joint Active Shooter Preparedness Exercise
Article By: Melissa Anderson, Town of West Point Communications Manager and Events Coordinator
On Thursday, June 5th, West Point Public Schools, the Town of West Point, the West Point Volunteer Fire Department, and the West Point Police Department, came together for a critical tabletop exercise focused on active shooter preparedness. Held at West Point Public Schools, this proactive training scenario is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our students, staff, and entire school community. These exercises are vital for improving coordination, enhancing communication, and strengthening emergency response strategies among all local agencies.
This joint effort underscores our community’s united commitment to protecting our Pointers. As always, the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority, and through this collaborative approach, we continue to build a culture of preparedness and resilience. Training exercises like this help keep our schools pointed in the right direction, reinforcing the shared values that guide our mission every day.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the three individuals who joined us as evaluators: York-Poquoson School Safety & Security Supervisor Kyle Hahn, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Lieutenant Sean Jackson, and retired Henrico Assistant Fire Chief Eugene Gerald. Your insights and expertise were invaluable in helping us grow and improve. A special thank you goes to Firefighter/Community Paramedic Greg Fleming of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department who built the exercise and facilitated everyone’s involvement—his guidance played a crucial role in the success and impact of this important training.
West Point’s strength lies in its unity, and this exercise is yet another example of our dedication to working together to keep our schools and town safe. Collectively, we remain committed to continuous improvement and proactive planning to ensure the highest level of safety for everyone in our community.
